A breakdown on the Seward Highway is not like one downtown
There is only one road between Anchorage and Girdwood, and for most of its length it runs beside Turnagain Arm. A car that breaks down out there sits somewhere very different from a car that breaks down on a city block.
One road, no way around it
Anchorage and Girdwood are connected by a single road, the Seward Highway. There is no side street to cut over to and no back way around a problem car. Once you are on it, you stay on it until the next pullout.
For most of that distance the road runs beside Turnagain Arm, where the tide rises and falls by as much as 40 feet and leaves mud flats that can trap someone who walks out on them. That is the setting a stalled car sits in while help is on the way.
Why help takes longer out there
- • No side roads. The highway is the only route, so a car stopped on it stays exactly where it stopped.
- • Narrow shoulders. Pullouts are spaced apart, and some sections leave little room to wait off the travel lane.
- • One long corridor. The distance to Girdwood is covered by this single road, not a grid of alternatives.
A car that will not start on a downtown block is a short drive from more than one shop. A car that will not start beside Turnagain Arm is a long way from anywhere, on a two-lane road with tight turns and a rock face on one side.

What to do if you stall along the way
Pull as far off the travel lane as the shoulder allows and put your hazards on. Stay inside the car with your seatbelt fastened if nearby traffic is moving fast.
Call for a mobile mechanic and give the nearest pullout or mile marker if you know it. That detail matters more here than it does on a numbered city street.
